We all know that the knife goes on the right, and the forks from left to right according to the dinner courses. But how big should the rug be? This question has plagued accomplished hosts and hostesses for generations.

Make certain that the rug is large enough to accommodate all of the chairs in the "intermezzo" position. That is, you want to make sure that when your guests push back from the table between courses, their chairs do not fall off of the rug. A simple rule is 30 to 36 inches all the way around the edge of the table, depending on the scale of the chair.

Florals and botanicals are another important consideration when adding holiday flair to any room. With today’s beautiful arrangements, they can come out early and be enjoyed the season through.

So as you are planning your Holiday entertaining, don't forget where the salad fork goes and complete your beautiful table settings starting from the rug up!
